Welcome to the Digital Peace Factory Contest!
You can win prizes for building peace in the US by inspiring Americans to respect the basic human dignity of all people when we talk about politics on social media.
Our goal is to generate fun, inspiring content to help Americans listen to each other, to find common ground, to ask questions of others, and to encourage mindful, calm conversation in these anxious times.
How does the contest work?
- Think of something you want to say to other Americans about how they can build peace in conversations on social media
- Create a meme, a GIF, or a short video to communicate your message. You can find free tools on the web to communicate some peacebuilding messages like these examples.
- Submit your creation to digitalpeacefactoryUS@gmail.com
- Like and share your digital content at the Digital Peace Factory social media sites
- We'll be giving out cash prizes for the best digital content along with recognition from prominent peacebuilding organizations!
- Head to the Rules tab for more information
Peacebuilding themes
Peacebuilding themes include nonpartisan concepts of dignity, active listening, empathy, polarity, management, and finding common ground, asking questions and being curious about the experiences that shape perceptions.
Personal Well Being
Helping people calm themselves down, offering calm to others, or interrupting, distracting, intervening or reframing a tense exchange on social media
Human Rights, Social Justice and Democracy
Digital content could include promoting human rights norms that respect the dignity of all people, and stories that affirm that people can change, that it is worth investing in kindness even to people who are unkind because it is effective at changing attitudes and behaviors.
Communication Skills for Community Well Being
Digital content offers quick ways to deescalate or redirect conflict behavior online or provide easy communication skills to help people address cyberbullying, hate speech toward an identity group, or false information. We can build a sense of community and accompaniment.
Theory of Change
Ordinary social media users in civil society are digital norm setters. In eastern Europe, thousands of citizens have been working with their government to effectively undermine Russian disinformation as citizen “elves” combatting Russian “trolls”. In Western Europe, thousands of social media users have joined the #IAmHere campaign which offers upstander support to victims of cyberbullying and hate speech. Civil society peacebuilders have an important role in helping to set norms for personal wellbeing, positive communication and human rights on social media.
